Jean
Simmons' life story is a tremendous journey through the Golden
Age of Cinema both in Britain and in Hollywood. A star while
still in her teens, Simmons gained a reputation as one of
Britain's most promising young actresses following acclaimed
performances in three films over just three years. For David
Lean she delivered a stand-out portrait of icy snobbery as
Estella in Great Expectations, played innocence off
against burgeoning sexuality as the shipwrecked girl in The
Blue Lagoon, and was the lovelorn Ophelia in Laurence
Olivier's staggeringly inventive Hamlet, for which
she was Oscar-nominated (as Best Supporting Actress) at the
age of 19.
In
1950 Simmons married English film heartthrob Stewart Granger
and moved with him to Hollywood. Her career soared. Strong
roles in So Long at the Fair and Young Bess in Britain were
mirrored by significant parts in American blockbusters like
The Robe, Desirée and Guys and Dolls.
