George Méliès (1861-1938) was the man
who brought magic to the movies. A stage magician and conjuror
who became obsessed with the possibilities of film during
its embryonic years, Méliès made more than 500
short films between the late 1890s and the 1910s, often
delving into fantasy and fairytales. Aside from exhibiting
an astonishing command of the medium, Méliès'
movies boast some of the earliest special effects seen in
motion pictures. Méliès was a master of the
dissolve, the smoke effect, the fade-out and set scenery -
all done with seamless ease and limited resources
A prolific and hugely important figure in the history of film,
George Méliès laid the groundwork for
many of the great sci-fi and fantasy films of the 20th Century.
The movies owe him a mammoth, unpayable debt.
BFF03's unique Méliès event is presented by
his grand-daughter Marie-Helene Méliès-Leherissey
and accompanied on the piano by his great-grandson Lawrence
Leherissey.
